KIKUYUGRASS NOW AVAILABLE FROM WEST COAST TURF
Palm Desert, CA………To meet increased requests for the product, West Coast Turf is now growing kikuyugrass sod for Southern California.
"We were asked to custom grow a few acres for a customer. Word got out that we had some, and the phones started ringing off the hook," said West Coast Turf spokesperson, John Marman. "There is definitely a demand for kikuyu in the golf market here. We are happy to be able to meet the demand."
Kikuyugrass is a low growing, warm season perennial grass native to tropical Africa. It spreads vigorously by both rhizomes and stolons. Kikuyu displays exceptional drought, disease, insect, and wear tolerance with rapid recovery rate. It exhibits good reception to winter temperatures, especially along the coast. In many cases, particularly on golf courses, common kikuyu has been a dominant turfgrass species. "Rather than implement an eradication program, turf managers have developed maintenance programs to encourage kikuyu development," Marman said .
